To judge from the number of visitors, the chief rivals in the Rijksmuseum to Rembrandt’s Night-watch are the dolls’ houses in the Decorative Arts Department.
The third and last dolls’ house in the museum dates from the 18th century. Unlike the first two, this house is constructed, not as a cabinet, but as severe and stately mansion with a typical Dutch rococo exterior. The facade, with its high flight of steps and richly ornamented window-surrounds above a carved door, gives the house a certain distinction. Inside the plan is more like that of a real house, thanks to the inclusion of a staircase.
